The Day I Signed with the Kansas City Chiefs

Sep 5, 2019 | Sports | 1 comment

My adrenaline levels reached an all-time high as I anticipated to run out of the Arrowhead home tunnel for the first time. While waiting for Mitch Holthus to announce my name over the speaker system, the years of hard work flashed before my eyes. Every ounce of blood, sweat, and tears. Every meeting, conference call, and line of code. Wait. What? 😂

If you’ve read through my About page, you already know I work for the best credit union in Kansas City. A few months before I joined CommunityAmerica in November 2017, they signed on as the Official Banking Partner of the Kansas City Chiefs. And before he threw the first of his 50 touchdowns during his inaugural campaign, we inked Patrick Mahomes as our Official Spokesman. Our office doesn’t just celebrate Red Friday; our CEO bought over 700 employees a Patrick Mahomes jersey for Christmas.

Chiefs Fantasy Camp

Fast forward to May 2019; I was chosen along with three co-workers to attend Chiefs Fantasy Camp. We kicked off camp with an evening cocktail reception with Mark Donovan, signed a 1-day contract with Brett Veach, and picked up our game gear. After breakfast the next morning in the Players Cafe, we got coached up by Andy Reid and broke down film with Mike Kafka and Dave Merritt. The team skill stations ended our morning. We took 3-step drops with Warren Moon, ran routes with Christian Okoye and Eddie Kennison, blocked with Will Shields, split the uprights with Jan Stenerud, and fielded punts with Dante Hall.

After a team lunch with Harrison Butker, Derrick Nnadi, and Andrew Wylie, we finished the day with a 7-on-7 flag football tournament. In the locker room, our coach Christian Okoye got our minds right with a pre-game pep talk before leading us down the tunnel. My body was shot out of a cannon as I heard Mitch’s voice ring through the stadium, “…from Kansas State University and a Corning Lion, #4, Ben Niehues!” The games were a blast. We missed the championship with a loss in overtime, but Hannah and my biggest little fans were there to see my first touchdown catch in Arrowhead Stadium. 🏟️

Chiefs Fantasy Camp was an unbelievable experience, even though I was sore for the next three days. And above all, the proceeds benefit The University of Kansas Health System Center for Concussion Management. This center is innovative in the field of concussion research and treatment for the entire Kansas City community — not just athletes.

I’m beyond grateful to work for an organization that partners with other organizations, like the Chiefs and many more, to invest in our community and power the rise of Kansas City.
